Made in India Ep. 6 – Popular Vehicles & Services Ltd.

Ft. Nimish Maheshwari, Beat The Stree

This week on LEARNING OF THE WEEK, we bring you the sixth episode of our podcast series, MADE IN INDIA.

In our recent episode, we’ve covered the story of Popular Vehicles & Services Ltd., a company that runs one of the oldest dealerships of India’s largest passenger vehicle company, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.

Much like real estate, success hinges on locationlocationlocation. As such, Popular Vehicles, part of the 86-year-old Kuttukaran Group, has strategically established multiple dealerships across South Indian states, where it is primarily based, giving it the location advantage.

While Maruti Suzuki has been the cornerstone of Popular’s business over its history, the company has diversified its portfolio to include brands like Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Honda. It has also ventured into commercial vehicles and electric two-wheelers (E2W), alongside expanding its operations geographically.

The company’s core revenue driver is the sale of new vehicles. However, the most surprising insight is that its highest-margin segment comes from other areas.

On today’s episode, we are joined by a very dear friend, Mr. Nimish Maheshwari, co-founder of Beat the Street, a renowned research organization that uncovers red flags in Indian listed companies. In today’s podcast, Mr. Nimish not only breaks down Popular Vehicles’ business model but also provides a comprehensive overview of how the automotive dealership industry operates in India and where Popular Vehicles stands within it.
